Hajime

It was a regular Monday morning. Everyone was bustling up around the campus during break time.

A couple of high school boys were hanging out in one corner under the shade of the tree.

 “Ah, another boring day… isn’t there anything better to do?” one of them complained.

“Yeah, why do we have to be stuck in school on a nice day like this?” another added.

Two girls passed by.

“Hey, who’s that?” one of them suddenly asked.

“Which one?” the other clarified.

“The one on the right.”

“Oh, her. You don’t know her? Oh right, you’re new here. Trust me. You don’t want to mess with her. So feisty.”

“Really? What made you say that? She seems cute.”

“Wha---? Hmm… yeah, she may be cute, but you’ll end up like the guy in “my sassy girl” if you end up together.”

“Come on, she can’t be that bad, besides that story ended well.”

“I can’t believe the two of you watched that sissy movie.” Another interrupted. Everyone laughed.

Tsugi no

“The sun’s burning me!” One girl complained.

“Hmm, I think it’s a nice day out.” The other answered.

“Yeah, except we’re not out, we’re stuck here. Let’s find a nice shade like those boys over--- Ooh, it’s that guy.”

“Who?”

“The one in the middle, over there sitting under the tree.”

“Oh, what about him?”

“He’s the talk of the school recently especially the girls. I can see why. He’s cute. He’s said to be good in sports too. He won us a soccer match last week. He’s the main striker on the team.”

 “Really? He looks a bit skinny to me.”

“Hehe, I think you’re the only one who would say that. Too bad, he seems to be interested in you.”

“Wha--? What made you say that?”

“He was looking this way. Hmmm... I wonder what they’re laughing about.”

“You’re kidding. Come on, P.E. class is about to start. We still have to change uniforms.”

“Great. More outdoor activity, more burning heat and more sweat.”         

Yosh

During P.E…

“Watch out!” someone yelled as a ball came whooshing over the field.

She ducked just in time, barely avoiding the ball coming towards her.

A boy came running after.

“I’m so sorry.  Are you hurt somewhere? I really didn’t mean to---” he said.

“I’m fine. Some striker you are.” She answered interrupting him and walked away.

“Wait!”

“What? I said I’m fine. What are you following me for?”

“I, uh, I just want to…to get the ball. Yeah, the ball is o—over there.”

“Kono onna wa hontou muzukashii…”(this girl I really difficult) he added as he went to get the ball.

“Ah sou ka, Watashi wa muzukashii desu ka? Anata mo hen desu.” (ah I see, so I’m difficult huh? Well, you’re also weird.) She said after him.

He stopped in his tracks, surprised at her response.

“Anata wa nihonggo ga dekimasu ka?”(you can speak Japanese?) he asked.

“Sou desu. Nani ga?” (that’s right, what about it?)

“Woah, sugoi. Iya, tada nanka shogeki... desu.”(amazing. I mean, it surprised me.)

“Ah sou. Anata wa nihonjin desu ka ne. Dewa sore ja.”

( I see,  so you’re  Japanese huh. Well that’s all.) She turned to leave again.

“Ah, chotto matte kudasai!”(Please wait a minute!)

“Ima nani?” (What now?)

“Na--- namae wa… anata no… nan desu ka? Oshiete kudasai.”

(you--- your na---name, what is it?  Please tell me.)

“Lina desu, doushite?” (Lina, why?)

“Ah Lina- chan ka… kawaii nee, anata no namae wa.”

(ah Lina-chan huh.. it’s cute, your name is.)

“ ‘chan’?”

“Ano, ii desu ka?”(umm, is it alright?)

“Ii yo. Betsuni.” (I don’t really mind.)

“Yokatta. eto… Watashi wa Chi---Chinen desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.”

(I’m gald. Umm I’m Chi—Chinen. Please to meet you.)

“Ah, hajimemashite, Chinen-kun. Sore dake?”

(ah. Please to meet you too, Chinen-kun. Is that all?)

“Ano, hontou ni anata wa daijoubu desu ka?”

(Umm, Are you really alright?)

“Itta darou? Dai-jou-bu desu. Shimpai sonna. Ja mata.”

(I said it already. I’m o-k. no worries. See ya.)

She smiled for the first time since they met.

“Kawaii… ano… eto… hai. Ja mata.” He smiled back.

(so Cute…I mean.. ummm.. right, see ya.)

HooHoo! (weeks has gone by)

“Lina-chan, ano…” (Lina-chan, umm..)

“Hmm, nani?” (what?)

“Dance wa…”

“Dance?”

“Prom.”

“Oh, dou datta?” (oh, what about it?)

“Issho ni ikimashoo…ka?”he started. “Ii ja nai ka?” he added hastily.

(Let’s go… together?)(no?)

“Eh?! Nande? Totsuzen.” (huh? Why? Suddenly.)

“Ah, iya, betsuni, nandemo nai. Wasurete.” (ah,no it’s nothing. Forget it.)

“Ah, sou ja nai. ii yo. Wakatta. Issho ni ikimashoo.” She’s smiling.

(it’s not that. I get it. Sure, let’s go together.)

“Hontou?” (really?)

“Hontou ni.” (really.)

“Yoshaaa!! Ureshii! Arigatou!” he was jumping all over. (Yes! So happy! Thank you!)

“Omoshiroi nee, anata wa.” She was laughing. (You’re so funny.)

“Daisuki!” he blurted out  because of happiness.  (I Love you!)

They were both surprised. None of them moved or talked for a while.

“Eto, sore wa…” (umm, that..)

“Daijoubu, daijoubu. Eto.. Ittekimasu.” She turned to leave. (it’s alright. Umm, I have to go.)

“Chotto matte.” He grab hold of her hand. (wait.)

“Kitte kudasai.” “ano, sore wa shinjitsu desu. Suki da yo. Hontou ni.”

(please listen. Umm that is the truth. I love you, really.)

“Hai? Eto..Sumimasen, demo kono jikan ga, Watashi no kokoro wa mada wakarimasen desu dakara…” (huh? Umm, sorry but at this time I still don’t understand my feelings so..)

“Wakarimashita. Kangaete kudasai. Matte masu.”( I understand. Please think about it. I’ll wait.)

She just nodded.

He let go of her hand.

She left.

Sore kara (after the prom)

“Kom ban wa anata wa tottemo kirei.” He said as he walked her home.

(You’re really beautiful tonight.)

“Arigatou. Kyo wa tanoshikatta desu.” He had placed his jacket on her shoulders.

(Thank you. I had fun today.)

“Iie,iro-iro to arigatou. Toku ni kom ban.” (no, thank you for everything especially tonight.)

“ ‘Iro-iro’ to… eh? Nande? Nani ga atta no?” (for everything.. Why? Did something happen?)

“Eto…” he looked at the ground.

“Nee, oshiete yo.”(hey, tell me.)

He remained quiet for some time.

Saigo made.

“Lina-chan,  Nihon ni boku wa kaerimasu. Boku no otoosan no shigoto wa owari desu dakara….”

(Lina –Chan, I’m going back to Japan. My Dad’s work is done here so…)

“Itsu?”(When?)

“Ashita.”(Tomorrow.)

“Eh? Hayai desu nee?” (huh? So soon?)

“Gomen nasai.”(I’m sorry.)

“Chi...”

“Lina…” they looked into each other’s eyes. Tears were falling.

“Psst. Lina. Teacher is calling you.”

“Ms. Chen! Are you listening?”

“HAI!” Lina stood up suddenly as she snapped out from her dream.

She was sleeping. She was startled. Everyone laughed.

“As I said, since you seem to be the most suitable for this position, being known to be the one who can speak Japanese, you will be his student buddy and help him get around the campus. Is that understood, Ms.Chen?” the teacher told her.

“Huh? I mean, Yes ma’am.” Lina said embarrassed. She looked around to see who the teacher was referring to.

There he was, standing beside the teacher.

He was also looking at her with an amused look.

Their eyes met.

“Mr.Yuuri, you may sit on that vacant chair next to her.” The teacher continued.

He nodded.

As he moved towards her, she could feel her heart pounding. Everyone’s eyes were following him.

 

At break time, they introduced each other.

“Watashi wa Chinen, Yuuri Chinen desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” He was smiling as he introduced himself.

 “uh, ha—hai. Eto… Wa—wa-- watashi no na—na mae wa Lina desu. Hajimemashite.” She stuttered trying to remember her Japanese. She was not sure whether it was correct or not as she introduced herself.

“Ano, kore wa Watashi tachi no gakou… desu.”  She continued as she gave him a tour of the school.

“Eto, my Japanese is not that good. Mooshiawake.” She apologized.

“Iie, daijoubu desu.” He hastily said. “Wakarimashita. I can still understand a little English.” He said smiling.

They continued with the tour, she can’t help feeling awkward as everyone kept staring at them as they walked on. Some were teasing her while most girls were trying to get his attention. She got somewhat annoyed by them while he just seem amused.

“Se yume mimashoo ka.” She thought. “mada mada da nee..”^^

(Dreams come true right.)(simply not there yet.)
